by memoinfogarage 2026. 5. 9.

  • I don’t know if he’ll come.
  • I don’t know whether he’ll come.
  • I’m not sure whether to wait or leave.
  • The question is whether we have enough time.
  • We talked about whether we should move.

  • I’m not sure about if he will come.
  • I don’t know if to buy the blue one or the red one.
  • Can you tell me if or not you’re interested?
  • The question is if we have enough time.
  • We talked about if we should move.

한눈에 보는 whether, if 차이

I don’t know if he’ll come.
whether ~인지 아닌지, 둘 중 어느 쪽인지 전치사 뒤, to부정사 앞, whether or not, 공식 문장 I’m not sure whether to wait.

  • to부정사 앞에 오면 → whether
  • or not이 바로 붙으면 → whether

⭕ I don’t know if he’ll come.
⭕ I don’t know whether he’ll come.

⭕ I don’t know whether he’ll come or not.
⭕ I don’t know if he’ll come or not.

하지만 or not이 바로 뒤에 붙는 경우에는 whether가 자연스럽습니다.

⭕ I don’t know whether or not he’ll come.
❌ I don’t know if or not he’ll come.

❌ We talked about if we should move.
⭕ We talked about whether we should move.

전치사 about 뒤에는 if보다 whether가 자연스럽습니다.
특히 about whether, interested in whether, question of whether 같은 구조는 자주 나옵니다.

  • We talked about whether we should move.
  • I’m interested in whether this method works.
  • There is a question of whether it is fair.

❌ I don’t know if to buy the blue one or the red one.
⭕ I don’t know whether to buy the blue one or the red one.

if to buy, if to go, if to stay

  • I don’t know whether to go.
  • She couldn’t decide whether to stay or leave.
  • We’re discussing whether to move house.

❌ Can you tell me if or not you’re interested?
⭕ Can you tell me whether or not you’re interested?
⭕ Can you tell me if you’re interested or not?

or not이 바로 붙는 경우에는 whether or not이 맞습니다.
if or not은 자연스럽지 않습니다.

다만 or not을 문장 뒤로 보내면 if도 가능합니다.

  • Can you tell me if you’re interested or not?

△ The question is if we have enough time.
⭕ The question is whether we have enough time.

The question is ...

  • The question is whether we have enough time.
  • The issue is whether we can afford it.
  • The problem is whether they will agree.

❌ I haven’t decided if to go or not.
⭕ I haven’t decided whether to go or not.
⭕ I haven’t decided whether I should go or not.

  • I haven’t decided whether to go.
  • We need to decide whether to accept the offer.
  • She couldn’t decide whether to call him.

⭕ If it rains, I’ll stay home.
❌ Whether it rains, I’ll stay home.

  • If you need help, call me.
  • If you don’t book now, you won’t get good seats.
  • If I have time, I’ll join you.

⭕ Whether he agrees or not is not important.
△ If he agrees or not is not important.

  • Whether he agrees or not is not important.
  • Whether we win or lose doesn’t matter.
  • Whether this works depends on the situation.

❌ I’m interested in if this method works.
⭕ I’m interested in whether this method works.

  • I’m interested in whether this method works.
  • We are concerned about whether it is safe.
  • The decision depends on whether they agree.

  • Is he coming?
  • Are you free?
  • Does this work?

  • I don’t know if he’s coming.
  • I don’t know whether he’s coming.
  • Let me know if you’re free.
  • Let me know whether you’re free.
  • Can you check if this works?
  • Can you check whether this works?

  • I’m not sure if she knows.
  • I’m not sure whether she knows.
  • Please check if the door is locked.
  • Please check whether the door is locked.

  • about whether
  • in whether
  • of whether
  • over whether
  • depends on whether

예문:

  • We talked about whether we should move.
  • I’m interested in whether this method works.
  • There is a question of whether we have enough time.
  • The discussion was over whether the plan was realistic.
  • It depends on whether they agree.

❌ We talked about if we should move.
❌ I’m interested in if this method works.

  • whether to go
  • whether to stay
  • whether to buy
  • whether to accept
  • whether to wait

예문:

  • I don’t know whether to go.
  • I’m not sure whether to wait or leave.
  • She couldn’t decide whether to stay.
  • We’re discussing whether to move house.
  • He hasn’t decided whether to accept the offer.

❌ I don’t know if to go.
❌ I’m not sure if to wait or leave.
❌ She couldn’t decide if to stay.

4. whether가 더 자연스러운 자리 ③: whether or not

or not이 바로 붙을 때는 whether or not을 씁니다.

예문:

  • I don’t know whether or not he’ll come.
  • Please tell me whether or not you agree.
  • We need to decide whether or not to continue.
  • Can you tell me whether or not you’re interested?

반대로 if or not은 자연스럽지 않습니다.

❌ I don’t know if or not he’ll come.
❌ Please tell me if or not you agree.

다만 or not이 문장 뒤로 가면 if도 가능합니다.

  • I don’t know if he’ll come or not.
  • Please tell me if you agree or not.

  • 바로 붙으면 whether or not
  • 뒤로 보내면 if ... or not도 가능

  • I can’t decide whether to paint the wall green or blue.
  • We need to decide whether we should stay or leave.
  • The question is whether the plan will work or fail.
  • I’m not sure whether he wants coffee or tea.

  • If it rains, I’ll stay home.
  • If you need help, call me.
  • If you don’t book now, you won’t get good seats.
  • If I have time, I’ll join you.
  • If he comes back, let me know.

  • I don’t know if he will come.
  • If he comes, I’ll call you.

whether와 if의 차이

  • I don’t know if he’ll come.
  • I don’t know whether he’ll come.

    • about whether
    • depends on whether
  • to부정사 앞
    • whether to go
    • whether to wait
  • whether or not
    • whether or not he comes
    • Whether he comes is not important.
    • The question is whether we have enough time.
